It is an extreme form of PEM (Protein Energy Malnutrition). Kwashiorkor means sickness the older child gets when the next baby is born. It occurs to the imbalance between proteins and carbohydrates. the affected child is apathetic, anaemic, anorexic and edematous with diarrhoea. There is severe growth retardation in the child. The diet for treatment of this usually consists of skim milk powder, sugar, cooked cereals, ripe banana, along with some fat or edible oil. The daily intake should be 150kcals per kg body weight and 5gm of protein/kg body weight.
